Unusual Sandwiching of the Cyclopentadienyl Anion in [K4(C5H5)2M2(OBut)6(CH3OCH2CH2OCH3)2]n (M = Ge, Sn)

Abstract: Synthesis and structural characterization of heterometal cyclopentadienyl-alkoxide coordination polymers formed by an unusual assembling of the formal {K2(C5H5)}+ and {M(OBut)3 -} (M(II) = Ge, Sn) fragments.

“…Developing methods for tailoring properties and tuning the stoichiometries of metals in multimetallic complexes is a considerable challenge, and for this purpose various synthetic methodologies have been established. The initial limited scope of unidentate ligands in mediating the formation of mixed-metal species through bridging led to the use of multidentate ligands including bi/tri-dentate functionalised moieties [1][2][3][4]. Another approach, which is receiving increasing attention, is the use macrocyclic ligands.…”

“…All four crystallographicallyunique NaeCp interactions are symmetrical, with equidistant NaeC bonds (2.708(10) Å) that are slightly longer than those in pristine NaCp (mean NaeC length is 2.649(9) Å) [15], but significantly shorter than those in CpNa(EDTA) where mean NaeC bond lengths of 2.925(11) Å) were measured [16]. A related potassiumbased polymer of less-well defined origin had previously been obtained by mixing KCp and Sn(O t Bu) 2 [17]. When CpZrCl 3 $dme was treated with NaGe(O t Bu) 3 in a manner analogous to that of the tin salt, Scheme 3, the reaction mixture became yellow and sodium chloride precipitated.…”

“…Metal alkoxides such as Al(OPr i ) 3 , Al(OEt) 3 [9], Nb(OPr i ) 5 [10], Zr(OPr i ) 4 AEPr i OH [11], and Ti(OR) 4 (R = Pr i , Et) [4] were prepared by methods described in the literature. Potassium nonaalkoxodititanates, KTi 2 (OR) 9 [6] and potassium nonaalkoxodistannates, KSn 2 (OR) 9 [13]. Zirconium was precipitated as mandelate and determined as ZrO 2 after ignition.…”

The appropriate reactants in desired quantities (g, mmol) used in each case are given below.…”
