Unveiling the solid-solution charge storage mechanism in 1T vanadium disulfide nanoarray cathodes

Abstract: Ultrathin 1T phase VS2 nanosheets were self-assembled on a flexible carbon cloth to form a binder-free electrode. The electrode exhibited a typical solid solution reaction, which is of great help in inhibiting the structural transition.

“…Before the growth of PEDOT shell, VS 2 nanosheets are deposited on the carbon cloth via a facile hydrothermal method. [40] During the subsequent nitriding process in ammonia atmosphere, sulfur atom in VS 2 is replaced by nitrogen atom, thus leading to the formation of mesopores structure in VN. Finally, PEDOT shell is constructed on the VN composite by an electrolytic deposition process forming VN/PEDOT core-shell arrays.…”

“…The S 2p XPS spectrum given in Figure c is separated into three peaks at 160.8, 161.9, and 163.7 eV. The first two peaks are attributed to S 2p 3/2 , while the third peak originates from S 2p 1/2 , indicating the S 2– oxidation state . The separated peaks of S 2p 3/2 could be caused by exposure of the VS 2 to air .…”

“…In general, a lithium metal anode, a separator, an electrolyte, and a sulfur cathode make up a lithium sulfur battery. [ 2 ] Unlike the reversible insertion and extraction of lithium ions in lithium‐ion batteries, [ 49 ] Li‐S batteries rely on a more elaborate conversion mechanism between lithium metal and elemental sulfur. [ 50 ] Specifically, the cathode active substance sulfur is successively reduced to various LiPSs by breaking the bond during the discharge process.…”
