Upgraded Analytical Model of the Cylinder Test

Abstract: A Gurney‐type equation was previously corrected for wall thinning and angle of tilt, and now we have added shock wave attenuation in the copper wall and air gap energy loss. Extensive calculations were undertaken to calibrate the two new energy loss mechanisms across all explosives. The corrected Gurney equation is recommended for cylinder use over the original 1943 form. The effect of these corrections is to add more energy to the adiabat values from a relative volume of 2 to 7, with low energy explosives hav… Show more

“…Figure 7 shows both the experimentally measured isentrope derived from the present incompressiblecase analysis (black curve) and the hydrocode-calibrated JWL isentrope (red) for PBX 9502 at the CJ detonation state [5]. 4 As with the 1-D approach [7], the experimental incompressible isentrope is lower than the JWL isentrope by about 30% over 1 < P < 15 GPa.…”

“…The incompressible case model can be used to estimate case shape and velocity from a given isentrope, providing a maximum fragment velocity. The detonation cylinder test is a standard performance experiment used to evaluate the capability of a condensed explosive to accelerate confining material [1][2][3][4]. The test configuration consists of an inert confiner tube tightly encasing a high explosive rod.…”

“…This method improved the accuracy in the low-pressure region and had a better description than the result calculated by the code. Souers et al [9] recommended a considerable corrected Gurney-type equation added shock wave attenuation and air gap energy loss. The corrected equation helps to improve the accuracy of the identified parameters.…”

“…[6] Based on cylinder expansion test, various researches have been carried out to obtain JWL parameters. [1,[7][8][9] All of the methods can be summarized as two categories. One method is by a trial and error procedure.…”

“…Scaling means to reduce all times and distances (but not velocities) to am ythical 12.7 mm inner wall radius, so that different sized shots may be easily compared.Equation (1) assumes the same wall thickness always, so correcting for copper wall-thinning came next [4]:where S and X are the inner radius and wall thickness at al ater time during expansion. We next corrected for the different directional angles used in the streak camera and with lasers [5,6].T his explained the difference between the streak camera and the laser experiments, but it left unanswered why half-wall tubes (wall 1/10th the radius) showed less wall loss than the standard full-wall (1/5th radius). Also unanswered was the question of how accurate the Cylinder test really is.…”
