Upper Punctal Occlusion versus Lower Punctal Occlusion in Dry Eye

Abstract: Punctal occlusion with collagen plugs in dry eye patients leads to the relief of subjective symptoms and the improvement of objective signs. The effectiveness of occluding the upper or lower punctum is similar. The LTMH is a valid indicator of the success of punctal occlusion.

“…They can, thus, improve tear volume and have similar efficacy with upper or lower tear duct occlusion [77]. In severe dry eyes, oral cholinergic agonists such as pilocarpine and cevimeline may improve symptoms by stimulating lacrimal gland secretion [78, 79].…”

“…This OCT system was previously described. 26,[28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35] Briefly, the superluminescent diode-based light source (Superlum, Broadlighter, D840-HP; Superlumdiodes, Ltd., Moscow, Russia) provided a beam of 840-nm wavelength and 50-nm bandwidth with a 7.2-mm scan depth in air. The longitudinal resolution of this SD-OCT system was approximately 6 lm in tissue, the lateral resolution was approximately 15 lm, and the scan speed was 24 frames per second.…”

“…Some patients with dry eyes were identified in this study. These patients generally will have recurrence within 1 -2 years of the first dry-eye symptoms [9][10][11]. During the initial stages, their symptoms were off and on but when the course of the disease become protracted, the lacrimal punctum may be blocked.…”
