Urban and Rural Disparities in a WeChat-Based Smoking Cessation Intervention among Chinese Smokers

Abstract: Introduction: Tobacco use, which is directly responsible for 10% of total deaths per year globally, remains consistently high, with approximately 20% of the population reporting regular consumption globally. Moreover, health disparities regarding tobacco consumption and smoking cessation are growing between rural and urban populations worldwide. Social media interventions for tobacco cessation may effectively reach both groups. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a WeChat-delivered smok… Show more

“…However, a study with 233 rural, 107 suburban, 63 urban participants found that rural smokers reported better smoking cessation outcomes than urban smokers. 40 This study has several strengths. A WeChat-based intervention has unique advantages in China, such as wide coverage, low cost, real time, flexibility, multimedia; the sample size is large, and participants came from 31 provinces and autonomous regions of China; blind randomisation was used; baseline prognostic factors were well balanced between the two study groups; researchers who gathered data and conducted analyses were masked to treatment allocation; the primary outcome of 26-week continuous abstinence was biochemically verified; all analyses were on an ITT basis, and we also conducted sensitivity analyses with the traditional approaches to deal with missing data in smoking cessation studies and per-protocol analyses, with consistent findings.…”

“…Another study among Malaysian illustrated smokers of Malay ethnicity was significantly successful in quitting behaviour [11]. Smokers who live in urban areas have a higher chance in smoking cessation because of better access to medical facilities and more media resources for tobacco control educational campaigns, as well as higher educational attainment [20], [21]. Smokers with chronic medical illness such as hypertension, diabetes, tuberculosis, ischemic heart disease and asthma were associated with successful quit smoking and they often used more assertive choice of tobacco-cessation treatment compared to those without comorbidities [7], [8], [10], [22]- [24].…”
