This paper employs the concepts of sustainability and habitability to define and measure ecological urbanism in informal settlements founded by people who have been forcibly displaced by violence. The objective is to identify the obstacles in meeting the tenets of ecological urbanism in informal settlements. We offer primary research from La Primavera, an informal settlement founded by internally displaced people in the late 1970s, located in the corregimiento El Hatillo of Barbosa, Antioquia in northwestern Colombia. Primary research includes qualitative and quantitative data gathered through 72 surveys and 45 technical assessments of properties and houses in the settlement. Situated between the Aburrá River and the northbound highway, above a gas pipeline and under an electricity pylon, La Primavera exists in a state of extreme risk, exacerbated by increasing migration which threatens to exceed the carrying capacity of the territory. Moreover, in Article 35 of Law 388 of 1997, the territory was declared a protected or restricted area and earmarked for the development of the regional commuter train, called the Tren de Cercanías, in 2017. The case study highlights the contradictions in the development agenda in Colombia by showing how development projects designed for the economic betterment and environmental conservation of the region negatively impact the quality of life for the most vulnerable inhabitants and expose them to greater environmental, economic, and social risk.

La vida cotidiana de las mujeres ha sido moldeada por los espacios en que habitan (Soto, 2018); y en particular, esto es aplicable a la vida de las mujeres desplazadas por la violencia en Colombia. En tal sentido, este artículo pretende comprender los determinantes de género que subyacen a las condiciones de habitabilidad de estas mujeres y que delimitan su derecho a la ciudad. Para ello, se hace uso de los datos desagregados por género de una encuesta sobre habitabilidad aplicada a 72 cabezas de hogar (46 mujeres y 25 hombres), del asentamiento La Primavera. El análisis de los determinantes de género en tres escenarios: vivienda, espacio público y equipamientos y amenaza y riesgo de desastres, permite afirmar que dichos determinantes se ven exacerbados por las afectaciones derivadas del conflicto armado, pero en contrapartida, las mujeres incrementan los esfuerzos para mejorar sus condiciones de habitabilidad en comparación con sus pares masculinos

With continuous developments in the integration of culture and tourism, adaptive reuse has highlighted the vitality of historic conservation areas while simultaneously causing great challenges to urban life, local economy, and cultural sustainability. Current studies focus on the adaptive reuse of historic buildings, with little focus on historic conservation areas. To expand this understanding further, this study investigated and analyzed the challenges faced by Chengdu historic conservation areas in the context of adapting to the tourism environment, from multiple perspectives, and proposed corresponding protection and development strategies. The results of the study obtained using field investigation and semi-structured interviews contribute to the literature on the adaptive reuse of historic conservation areas; they deepen our understanding of the identified factors and provide in-depth knowledge. These findings provide a reference for future practices and promote the sustainable development of historic conservation areas for improved conservation and economic returns.
