Urban Morphological Change Analysis of Dhaka City, Bangladesh, Using Space Syntax

Abstract: This article is based on a study of the morphological changes of Dhaka City, the capital of Bangladesh. The main objective of the research is to study the transformation of urban morphology in Dhaka City from 1947 to 2007. Three sample wards (18, 19 and 72) of Dhaka City Corporation are strategically selected as the study areas. Ward 72 has an indigenous type of organic settlement, whereas ward 19 is a planned area, and ward 18 represents a mixed (both planned and informal) type of settlement. In this research… Show more

“…Land use and land cover changes, as well as the phenomenon of land take have been analyzed through a monitoring method based on remote sensing techniques to perform multi-temporal evaluations to provide important support for planning choices [43][44][45]. The use of satellite imagery (Landsat TM 4-5) and remote sensing techniques in a GIS environment allows defining various parameters, through supervised classification, in order to discriminate urban areas from other classes.…”

“…As URED usually occurs over a wider time span, the case study with a time span of just 10 years was not enough to understand the dynamics of long-run processes of URED [61]. Additionally, it should be noted that this study was conducted just in Chengdu at county-level, this methodology requires further study to increase their level of applicability and efficiency at all spatial and temporal scales, which might give some new insights [62][63][64]. The authors are aware that a single case study cannot prove a theoretical framework; nevertheless, the findings can serve as a useful reference to monitor dynamic changes in sustainable urban and rural development for planners and policy makers.…”
