Urban Morphology and Crime Patterns in Urban Areas: A Review of the Literature

Abstract: The emerging research on urban morphology provide sufficient explorations that result in a better understanding of crime areas and fear of crime in cities. Despite the effort so far, the existing literature on morphology of crime areas and pattern of crime presents different perspectives to the study of crime and spaces, reflecting the varied field of urban morphological research. There is a need to understand these perspectives in view of their directions and inherent limitations for effective understanding o… Show more

“…Although safety, security, and crime can be reduced, it is debatable whether all risks can be completely wiped off in an area. Safety and its antithesis of unsafe are, therefore, conceived and viewed as important and intriguing concepts Kelling, 1982, 1989;Lawanson et al, 2013;Farinmade et al, 2018;Iliyasu et al, 2022). Makinde (2020) highlighted that although increased safety precautions may alleviate the resident's fears, upgrades and alterations to the physical environment can introduce visual cues that may intensify concerns about neighborhood crime, safety, and security in other people as well as give highrisk signals to attract criminals to such highly "protected and defended" properties.…”

“…The formation of an urban risk island is shaped by the development of a common, shared activity space within which crime events concentrate in predictable locations and at predictable times (Curman et al, 2020). The emerging environmental criminological researchers with strong focus and growing research interest in crime and place have applied, tested and extended these theories to explore the impact of urban form and structure on the spatial pattern of crime in cities (Iliyasu et al, 2022a).…”

“…Crime concentrates not just in specific geographic areas, but in particular locations (Sherman, 2016). Recently, there are emerging rich literature focusing on crime concentration and places at both meso and micro geographic units, such as street blocks and segments (Weisburd et al , 2012; Iliyasu et al , 2022). However, crime opportunities present at a particular place cannot be separated from the surrounding spatial context including both the built and social environment elements (Eck and Weisburd, 1995).…”
