The utilization of urban underground space (UUS) offers an effective solution to urban problems but may also negatively affect urban development. Therefore, UUS development needs better concerted guidelines to coordinate various urban systems and the multiple components of the underground world. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which should be viewed as important yardsticks for UUS development, do not explicitly mention urban underground space, although many of them are affected by both the positive and negative consequences of its development. To fill this gap, this review lays the foundations of relevant UUS concepts and uses exemplary cases to reveal that 11 out of 17 SDGs can be linked with UUS uses. These linkages also manifest that land administration, integrated planning, architectural design, and construction technology are critical dimensions for increasing the contributions of UUS to the realization of SDGs. To achieve multi-disciplinary synergies among these four critical dimensions, a collaborative approach framework based on spatial data infrastructure is required. Thus, this work provides academics and practitioners with a holistic view of sustainable UUS development.

This paper attempts to develop a highly reliable security monitoring system for integrated utility tunnel (IUT). For this purpose, a minimum integrated system (MIS) with multiple sensors was designed to acquire the main parameters in the IUT, including air composition, temperature, pipeline pressure, humidity, and shot video/image of the IUT. Then, each MIS was connected to the software system on the ground via a wired network, forming a wire-based IUT communication and monitoring system. Next, three subsystems were designed on Java, including pipeline operation monitoring subsystem, internal environment monitoring subsystem and security monitoring subsystem. The test results show that the data measured by our method agree well with the actual data in the IUT, indicating that the proposed system can effectively monitor various parameters in the IUT. The research findings lay the basis for intelligent monitoring in smart cities, and mark the future trend of IUT management in Chinese cities.

Urban utility tunnel has been regarded as an important symbol of urban modernization, so it is important to understand the quantized relationship between city development and urban utility tunnel for city management and policy making. In this study, the internal relationship between the development amount of urban utility tunnel and urban population density was discussed, as well as urban GDP per capita, urban construction land area per capita and urban land price index, based on the IBM SPSS platform, through adopting the development amount of urban utility tunnel and the urban development data of the past 46 years of Japan. It was shown that the correlation relationship of the development amount of urban utility tunnel with the density of urban population was comparatively strong negative, and relatively strong positive, comparatively strong positive, relatively strong negative for GDP per capita, urban construction land area per capita and urban land price index respectively, which explained the driving effect that urban development imposed on urban utility tunnel construction in essence. Furthermore, a quantitative model was proposed for the relationship between the development amount of urban utility tunnel and urban development indexes, and the model could be a reference for decision making of urban utility tunnel development in China and other countries.
