Ureaplasma urealyticum and chronic lung disease

Abstract: Neonatal lower respiratory tract colonisation with mycoplasma organisms was examined for an association with chronic lung disease. Ureaplasma urealyticum colonised 9/70 (13%) infants less than 1500 g. Seven (78%) colonised and 33 (54%) non-colonised infants developed chronic lung disease. Logistic regression analyses revealed early gestation, but not mycoplasma colonisation, was independently associated with chronic lung disease.

“…The fundamental question, whether or not U. urealyticum is pathogenic for premature infants, is regularly raised, as can be seen from the conflicting reports in the literature (2,3,8,13). The present study showed that U. urealyticum colonization was associated with both the host defence response and respiratory tract involvement, suggesting the pathogenicity of U. urealyticum in premature infants.…”

“…This suggests that U. urealyticum colonization aggravates the acute respiratory disease in the preterm infant. In previous studies, U. urealyticum colonization has been common, especially in immature infants (8), emphasizing the importance of gestational age when analysing prematurity-related symptoms and U. urealyticum colonization. In the present study, U. urealyticum colonization was not significantly associated with gestational age.…”

“…Fourteen controlled studies were found in the MED-LINE search (table 3). In five studies, endotracheal aspirates were taken [5,7,8,11,12]. Seven studies had obtained nasopharyngeal cultures [13][14][15][16][17][18][19].…”
