Urethane foams from animal fats I. Oxyethylated 9, 10‐dihydroxystearic acid

Abstract: Threo‐ anderythro‐9,10‐dihydroxystearic acids were reacted with 2, 4, 6 and 8 moles of ethylene oxide. The oxyethylated polyols from thethreo acid, adjusted to equivalent weight 100 with triisopropanolamine, were converted to satisfactory rigid foams by mixing with corresponding amts of isocyanate‐terminated oxypropylated sorbitol prepolymers of three viscosities. Typical foam properties had maxima for the tetra‐ or hexaoxyethylene polyol, and most properties paralleled prepolymer viscosity.

“…14 Casting resins and PUR foams synthesized from vegetable oils have been in existence for some time. [15][16][17][18][19][20] Technologies to produce polyols from palm oil and palm kernel oil that are economically competitive to petroleum-based polyols have been developed in Malaysia. [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] These polyols are then reacted with polyisocyanate to produce PUR.…”

“…In general, the present fat-based polyols, both unbrominated and brominated, gave foams of better quality than those from HET and HBT, and on a par with those made from alkoxylated dihydroxystearic acids (7,8). The polyols responded well to blending with adjuvants, providing foam properties at equivalent wt 120 only a little inferior to those at 100.…”

“…To overcome these problems the isophorone diisocyanates used as industrial coating. 1,2,3 Soyabean oil is composed of triglycerides of long chain fatty acids. The most common chain lengths in these fatty acids are 18 (or) 20 carbon atoms which can be saturated (or) unsaturated, where unsaturation of the double bonds are located at 9,12 and 15 carbon.…”
