Urogastrone–epidermal growth factor concentrations in prostatic fluid of normal individuals and patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy

Abstract: High concentrations (272 +/- 33 ng/ml) of urogastrone-epidermal growth factor were measured in prostatic fluid from normal males by a specific radioimmunoassay. Significantly lower concentrations (155 +/- 24 ng/ml) were observed in the prostatic fluid of patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy than in the age-matched normal controls (2P less than 0.01). The growth factor content of seminal fluid was accounted for by the contribution of prostatic fluid. Immunochemical studies failed to show evidence of synth… Show more

“…The normal and tumoral prostatic epithelium produces large amounts of EGF, 29 its receptor was found to be overexpressed in prostatic tumors, and the EGF/EGFR pathway has been associated with AI development. 9,30 Cumulatively, it was shown that EGF and EGFR expression levels in PC cells are enhanced during disease progression to AI and metastatic PC.…”

“…109 EGF has been shown to be mitogenic to prostate cells and accordingly, prostatic secretions have been found to contain the highest EGF levels of all human¯uids. 118 EGF is androgen-regulated, and hence, androgen withdrawal is followed by a decrease in EGF levels, which can nevertheless be restored by administration of minimal levels of testosterone. 119 Elevated levels of EGFR and TGF-a mRNA and protein have been observed in prostate cancer specimens compared with benign, secretory epithelium, and this has been associated with a more aggressive disease and a poor prognosis.…”
