“…Our results agree with the those of Bedogni et al 15,16 demonstrating a significant increase in the percentage of ECW and in the ECW/ICW ratio in the DMD group. Bedogni et al, 16 using deuterium oxide and sodium bromide dilution techniques, showed MFBIA to provide an accurate assessment of total body water in children with obesity, DMD, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. However, these investigators also found the coefficient of variation for ECW measurement to be highest in DMD, at 12.5%, and that DMD patients have a higher ECW/ ICW ratio when compared with controls.…”

“…However, these investigators also found the coefficient of variation for ECW measurement to be highest in DMD, at 12.5%, and that DMD patients have a higher ECW/ ICW ratio when compared with controls. 15,16 This group could not determine whether the elevation of this ratio was secondary to an increased fat mass that could not be determined by the measurements of skinfold thickness via calipers or if it was due to dystrophic lean muscle tissue with abnormally low ICW. Our study provides complimentary data to the studies by Bedogni et al 15,16 because of the addition of DEXA measures of FTM, which also determines the presence of intramuscular fat that would normally elude measurement by calipers.…”
