Use of hybrid microcapsules, chitosan-methyl esterified sericite-tannin, for the removal of harmful lake algae and nutrient

Abstract: This paper outlines the development of a novel, low-cost, hybrid material from chitosan-methyl esterified sericite-tannin. The adsorbent material is then successfully utilized for the efficient removal of lake nutrients and harmful algae. In a FT-IR analysis, peaks related to -OH stretching, carbonyl and carboxylic groups, and CH stretching were newly created or expanded, and microcapsules were found to facilitate the removal of harmful algae and nutrients. The hybrid microcapsules obtained high removal effici… Show more

“…It is mainly used for drug delivery [ 218 ] as well as for applications in civil construction, hospitals and as a carrier for cosmetics. The versatility of the microencapsulation technique allows it to be used with perfumes, cosmetics and personal care products [ 219 , 220 ], food [ 221 , 222 ], pharmaceutical and medicinal treatments [ 223 , 224 ], pest and insect repellents [ 225 ], environmental recovery [ 226 ], construction [ 227 ] and textile [ 228 ].…”

“…Chitosan is the second most abundant natural biopolymer after cellulose and it has several amino and hydroxyl functional groups [30]. Due to the presence of positive charge on its amino groups, chitosan is the only commercially available water-soluble cationic polymer so far [31]. Furthermore, chitosan is pH sensitive due to the presence of D-glucosamine in its structure.…”

“…Various treatments have been utilized, including several physical, chemical and biological methods. The following methods/reagents have been used to address the problems caused by Cyano-HABs: ultra-sonication [10], waterwheel system for water aeration [11,12], loess spraying [12], algicidal materials [13], coagulants [14] and algicidal bacteria [15]. Spraying loess into water bodies has been primarily employed to control Cyano-HABs in South Korea [12].…”

Spraying loess into water bodies has been primarily employed to control Cyano-HABs in South Korea [12]. However, the aforementioned methods have several drawbacks; their application could cause severe damage to aquatic biota, lead to secondary contaminations and induce cyanotoxins during the Cyano-HABs treatment [16,17].…”
