Use of improved inputs and its effect on maize yield and profit in Uganda

Abstract: Maize is an important crop, produced by nearly all households in Uganda. Yet, the yield of the crop is low, mainly blamed on low use of improved technologies. In a bid to understand why farmers are reluctant to adopt modern agricultural technologies, which are hailed for enhancing productivity, this study assessed the effect of improved inputs use on maize yield and profit in Uganda. The analysis was based on the Uganda National Household Survey data of 2005/06. A graphical analysis was used to assess the yiel… Show more

“…It is the most popular contributor to income and food for smallholder farmers and for institutions like the police, the army, prisons, schools, and hospitals. Thus, maize act as the main source of food for such institutions and contributes over 11% of the caloric intake [4][5][6]. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), maize forms an important part of the staple food supplies [3,7].…”

“…Smallholders account for 80% of the rural poor in Uganda, but are also the major producers of maize. Maize is grown in every part of the country [8] and provides a direct source of income for over two million households, over 100,000 traders, and 600 millers [9]. Increasingly, maize has become a major non-traditional export cash crop particularly benefitting smallholder farmers and is therefore extremely important to many households for both food security and income www.rsisinternational.org Page 2 [8].…”

“…Agriculture in Uganda, where 95 percent of the farmers are smallholders with landholdings averaging two hectares, is characterized by low land productivity (Njeru et al, 2016). Taking an example of maize, which is one of the most important crops grown for food and sale in Uganda (Agona et al, 2001), its productivity in terms of grain yield has been recorded at 1.5 tons/ha compared to the potential of 7 tons/ha (Okoboi et al, 2012;Simtowe et al, 2019). One of the major factors contributing to these low crop yields is the lack of adequate nutrients for crops resulting from soil nutrient depletion (Tadele, 2017), low recirculation of animal manure, low share of legumes, lack of crop residue (straw) management, and low mineral fertilizer application regimes (Odhiambo and Mag, 2008).…”
