Use of nonergot alkaloid-producing endophytes for alleviating tall fescue toxicosis in stocker cattle1,2

Abstract: Grazing studies were conducted to determine cattle growth performance, evaluate toxicosis, and compare grazing behavior in stocker cattle grazing nonergot alkaloid-producing endophyte-infected (AR542 or AR502), endophyte-free (E-), or wild-type toxic endophyte-infected (E+) Jesup, Georgia-5, and Kentucky-31 tall fescue. Replicated 0.81-ha tall fescue paddocks were established at the Central Georgia Branch Station at Eatonton and the Northwest Georgia Branch Station at Calhoun during October 1998 and were stock… Show more

“…Gains were 57% greater and serum concentrations of prolactin were similar in lambs grazing Jesup or EF compared with EI fescue (Bouton et al, 2002;Parish et al, 2003a). Calf average daily gain and gain/ha were also greater on NE than toxic EI fescue (Parish et al, 2003b).…”

“…In proof of concept grazing studies (Bouton et al 2002), MaxQ was found to provide stand survival equivalent to E+ tall fescue, but markedly better than Etall fescue. Removing ergot alkaloids also showed dramatic positive effects on animal performance (Bouton et al 2002;Parish et al 2003aParish et al , 2003bWatson et al 2004). With cows and calves at weaning, cow body condition scores were higher and calves were 22.7 kg heavier on MaxQ pastures compared to toxic E+ pastures.…”
