Use of Personal Digital Assistants for Retrieval of Medical Images and Data on High-Resolution Flat Panel Displays

Abstract: For its new acute care hospital, the University of California at Los Angeles is evaluating innovative technology involving high-resolution flat panel display devices configured as "network appliances" that can be wall mounted for use in the retrieval and display of medical images and data. Physicians and healthcare providers can log on with wireless handheld computers, which can serve as an identification device as well as a navigational tool for selecting patient records and data. These data are displayed and… Show more

“…The systems enable shared reviewing with joint image navigation, synchronized cursors for pointing, and image annotations. Shareable displays [18] have also been developed using PDAs to access and navigate radiology material on larger displays. Recent advances in mobile technology, allow us to overcome the limitations of previous systems [3] to support distributed interaction with radiology imagery.…”

“…Other projects have shown additional promising uses of mobile displays in combination with large displays, e.g. the ability to present additional information [21,27], enhance mobility of the overall system [9], improve control and security (e.g., for authentication [16]), leverage group discussions [22], and share information across different classes of displays [17].…”

“…One solution that eliminates the need to display images on a PDA is a system under development at the University of California at Los Angeles that uses a PDA to control a high-resolution, wall-mounted, flat-panel display (9). The display functions as the equivalent of a viewbox.…”
