Use of Real-Time Ultrasonography as an Alternative Method for Early Detection, Confirmation and Evaluation of Rat Pregnancy

Abstract: Researchers sometimes face difficulties in the diagnosis of pregnancy and assessment of embryonic development. Ultrasonography (US) is a non-invasive imaging method with minimal side effects on the subjects or operators. It provides real-time evaluation of the physiology of rapidly moving structures (i.e., heart) and facilitates evaluation of fetal tissue development. US discerns tissues based on composition, making it the imaging method of choice for abdominal examination. In this study we used real-time US a… Show more

“…To evaluate the normal development of foetuses during pregnancy, ultrasonographic volumetric parameters were recorded. In humans the method is widely used to provide valuable information about the normal progress of gestation while advances in spatial and temporal resolution have expanded its use in laboratory animal settings (Arleo et al, 2014;Stasinopoulou et al, 2014). As expected, baseline measurements on 14th day of pregnancy did not reveal any statistical significant difference between groups as far as the placenta width, embryonic sac length and width and fetus length are concerned (Table 1).…”

“…Early diagnosis of pregnancy is a common request of all clinicians and researchers, so the publication of an atlas of ultrasonographic diagnosis, confirmation and evaluation of all stages of rat pregnancy has substantially contributed to the reduction of laboratory animals sacrificed in reproduction according to the 3R principle projects (Ypsilantis et al, 2009), (Stasinopoulou et al, 2014).…”

“…Fetal ultrasonography studies conducted with pregnant rats are a promising field in perinatal experimental research, decreasing the need for euthanizing animals for the investigation of fetal development 10,11 . Furthermore, ultrasonography is currently part of routine obstetric procedures 2,3,8 .…”

“…Ultrasonography does not yield the false positive results often associated with other methods involving the use of drugs that effect fetal hemodynamics. In experimental research, the use of non-invasive methods can translate to fewer euthanized animals 3,10,11 . Patterns observed in parametric measurements employing non-invasive techniques such as Doppler velocimetry allow the construction of normality scales that can find utility in the investigation of disorders affecting physiology…”
