Use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in warm mix asphalt (WMA) pavements: a review

Abstract: The limit in the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement material (RAP) proportion is restricted due to stiffness and workability issues related to RAP. This problem is addressed with the help of warm mix asphalt (WMA) which increases the proportion of RAP used by producing mixes having same/better properties viz., better workability, reduced viscosity than hot mix asphalt (HMA) at lower temperatures. This paper reviews research conducted on the use of RAP material in WMA pavements. It presents and discusses work do… Show more

“…However, concerns with regards to its heterogeneity and intrinsic properties hinder its incorporation in high contents, particularly in the wearing course mixtures. This issue may be addressed by coupling RA with recycling agents and WMA technologies (Farooq & Mir, 2017;Subhy et al, 2019). Moreover, electric arc furnace steel slag, one of the main by-products of the metallurgical industry, has been utilised in the last decades as a substitute for coarse aggregates in asphalt mixtures.…”

“…Currently, due to the continuous development of highway construction, a large amount of old asphalt mixture are produced in the process of new road construction, remodeling, or the demolition of road structures, which aggravates the impact of solid waste on the global environment [ 1 5 ]. In the past few years, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) has attracted comprehensive attention owing to its advantage of supporting a green economy [ 6 – 8 ].…”

“…In the last decades, relevant attention to these issues and environment preservation has remarkably risen. In this regard, numerous researchers have investigated and analyzed the possible sustainability issues caused by traditional approaches and technologies in pavement construction and maintenance phases, and proposed modern and more efficient sustainable solutions that may effectively reduce consumption of energy and resources, as well as the production of waste [4][5][6].…”
