Use of rosin‐based nonionic surfactants as petroleum crude oil sludge dispersants

Abstract: The present work provides better knowledge for composition analyses of the sludge and evaluates the best effective and economical treatment of petroleum sludge. In this respect, nonionic polymeric surfactants based on rosin were prepared by esterification of rosin with different molecular weights of polyethylene glycol (PEG 400, 600, 1000(PEG 400, 600, , 2000 to produce rosin ester surfactants. The esterified rosin was reacted with maleic anhydride followed by reaction with diaminobutane or triethylene tetram… Show more

“…Demulsifiers are the best oil-field chemicals that can be used to solve the petroleum crude oil emulsions, petroleum sludge and gas hydrates problems [53,54]. The demulsifiers usually are mixtures of surfactants having HLP ranged from 10 to 13 based on types of crude oil emulsions [53].…”

“…Demulsifier blends for application include epoxy resinbased alkoxylates; polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylenepolyoxyethylene (POE-POP-POE); alkylphenol-formaldehyde resin alkoxylates; orthoesters alkoxylates; and fatty acid alkoxylated and polyoxyalkylenated amines (Hellberg and Uneback, 2007;Al-Sabagh et al, 2008;Atta and Elsaeed, 2011).…”

“…It is important to control the amount of surfactant in the formulation of emulsions to ensure the stability of these emulsified systems and to limit their toxicity. Rosin surfactants were previously synthesized and applied in different fields such as corrosion inhibitors, oil spill dispersants, and petroleum sludge dispersants [8][9][10][11][12]. Rosin is a renewable natural resin obtained from the exudation of pine and conifer trees [7].…”

“…Although bio-based polymeric surfactants based on rosin still have an insignificant share in the current marketplace dominated by fossil carbon-based polymers, they are poised to grow rapidly in the near future. Rosin surfactants were previously synthesized and applied in different fields such as corrosion inhibitors, oil spill dispersants, and petroleum sludge dispersants [8][9][10][11][12].…”
