“…A valuable single agent is selenium sulphide, which came to prominence after Slepyana and Slinger and Hubbanl 4 had demonstrated its specific antiseborrhocic action. Unfortunately, selenium sulphide is potentially toxic and, while it appears to be well tolerated during short contact with the skin, continuous use of selenium sulphide may be associated with diffuse hair loss 7 and may eventually lead to excessive oiliness 8 • Although other methods of treatment have been recommended, such as pre-shampoo or continuous application of the detergent keratolytics, or continuous application of antiseptic scalp lotions, only shampoos possess the desirable action of degreasing the scalp and simultaneously removing loose epidermal scaling and debris.…”
