Use of Self-Organizing Map to Analyze Images of Fungi Colonies Grown fromTriticum aestivumSeeds Disinfected by Ozone Treatment

Abstract: We submitted to ozone treatment Triticum aestivum (common wheat) seeds severely contaminated by fungi. Fungi colonies developed when seeds were placed over malt agar medium in Petri dishes; Fusarium sp. and Alternaria sp. were identified. However, conventional colonies counting did not allow a clear assessment of the effect of ozone disinfection. We thus used self-organizing maps (SOMs) to perform an image analysis of colonies surface area that clearly showed a significant disinfection effect on Fusarium sp.

“…150 grains. A general scenario of invigoration of the seeds affected by mycelium is in a good agreement with the ideas in (Raila et al 2006;Marique et al, 2012;Savi et al 2014;Zahoranová et al 2016). Agents of grain fusariosis are well-treated by ozone, and the attributes of their development become less distinguishable as the ozone concentration increases.…”

“…Ozone inhibits the surface biocontami-Vol. 64, 2018 (1): 34-40 https://doi.org/10.17221/106/2016-RAE nations, but it does not change the capability of the seeds to germinate (Marique et al 2012) and it does not affect the physical and biochemical properties of the seeds (Savi et al 2014). This allows for using ozone for disinfectant treatment of the seeds (Raila et al 2006;Marique et al 2012).…”

“…To achieve this, Saguaro utilises a SOM, which is an efficient unsupervised pattern recognition and classification algorithm. SOMs have been used in bioinformatics, including classification of the selectivity of inhibitors [13], image analyses of fungal colonies [14], and transcription factor binding site identification [15]. A feature that distinguishes a SOM from other clustering and classification algorithms is that it models the topology of the input data onto its neurons by reducing the dimensionality of the input space.…”
