A feeding experiment was conducted to determine the effect of dietary distillers dried grain (DDG) on the growth and body composition of juvenile abalone, Haliotis discus hannai. Three diets were formulated to contain 0% (DDG0), 30% DDG (DDG1) replacing wheat flour and 30% DDG (DDG2) replacing fish meal and wheat flour. A commercial feed (CF) was also compared with experimental diets. Three replicate groups of abalone averaging 0.6 ± 0.01 g were fed one of the four diets for 14 weeks. The highest survival rate was observed in the abalone fed the DDG2 diet, which was higher than that of abalone fed the DDG0 diet. Weight gain, shell length, shell width and soft body weight of the abalone were not affected by dietary DDG and CF diet (P > 0.05). Proximate and amino acid composition of the soft whole body were not affected by dietary DDG and CF diet (P > 0.05). The result of this experiment suggests that DDG is a good ingredient to replace fish meal and wheat flour in the diet and could be used up to 30% in the diet without negative effects on the growth performance of juvenile abalone Haliotis discus hannai.

RESUMO -Este experimento foi conduzido, por um período de 100 dias, com o objetivo de estudar diferentes fontes e níveis de proteína bruta em dietas para juvenis de pacu. Foram utilizados 252 juvenis de pacu, distribuídos em 36 caixas de cimento amianto com volume de 150 litros, sendo estocados sete peixes em cada unidade. Durante o período experimental, a temperatura média da água permaneceu em 28 o C e os demais parâmetros limnológicos (oxigênio dissolvido, pH, alcalinidade e condutividade) apresentaram-se dentro dos níveis adequados para o desenvolvimento desta espécie. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, no qual foram avaliados nove tratamentos em esquema fatorial 3 x 3, sendo três níveis de substituição da fonte protéica de origem animal (farinha de peixe), pela fonte de origem vegetal (farelo de soja), aos níveis de 0, 50 e 100% e três níveis de proteína bruta (18, 22 e 26%). Os resultados obtidos indicaram que o nível de 22% de proteína bruta foi mais adequado e a farinha de peixe pode ser substituída parcial ou totalmente pelo farelo de soja. A substituição da farinha de peixe por farelo de soja proporcionou os melhores coeficientes de digestibilidade, sem afetar ganho de peso, conversão alimentar, taxa de crescimento específico e taxa de eficiência protéica dos juvenis. Esta substituição também não afetou a composição corporal dos peixes, como a eficiência de retenção de nitrogênio, nitrogênio corporal, gordura corporal e nitrogênio e gordura no ganho de peso.Palavras-chave: digestibilidade, fontes de proteína, pacu, peixes, níveis de proteína Sources and Levels of Crude Protein in Diets for Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) FingerlingsABSTRACTS -The experiment was carried out, during 100 days, to study different crude protein sources and levels of diets for pacu fingerlings. Two hundred and fifty two pacu fingerlings were assigned to 36 aquariums, containing seven fishes, with 150 liters of water. During the experimental period, the average temperature of the water was 28 o C and other limnology parameters (dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity and conductivity) remainded within the levels adopted for the good development of this specie. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with nine treatments in a 3 x 3 factorial arrangement with three sources of animal protein (fish meal) replaced by vegetable protein (soybean meal) at the level of 0, 50 and 100% and three protein levels (18, 22 and 26%). The results showed that 22% of crude protein was better and the fish meal can be partially or totally replaced for soybean meal showing the best digestibility coeficients without affecting fishes performance concerning weight gain, feed:gain ratio conversion, specific growth rate and protein efficiency rate. Effects of Dietary Inclusion of Distillers Dried Grain as a Partial Replacement for Fish Meal on Growth Performance of Juvenile Rockfish Sebastes schlegeliKi-Min BAE Sang-Min LEE ㆍ (Gangneung-Wonju National University) AbstractA feeding experiment was conducted to determine the use of distillers dried grain (DDG) as a partial replacement for fish meal in the diet for juvenile rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. Four iso-nitrogenous (50% crude protein) and iso-caloric (4.3 kcal/g) diets (designated as DDG0, DDG7, DDG14, and DDG21) were formulated to contain 0, 7, 14, and 21% DDG. Triplicate groups of juvenile rockfish (initial body weight, 10.2±0.2 g) were fed one of the experimental diets to visual satiety twice a day (09:00 and 17:00) for 8 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, survival of rockfish was above 97% and not affected by dietary DDG levels (P>0.05). Weight gain, feed efficiency and daily feed intake of juvenile rockfish were significantly decreased with increase of dietary DDG levels (P<0.05). Condition factor, hepatosomatic index and visceralsomatic index of juvenile rockfish were not significantly affected by dietary DDG levels (P>0.05). No significant differences were observed in the contents of moisture, crude protein, crude lipid and ash of the whole body and dorsal muscle in juvenile rockfish fed the experimental diets (P>0.05). Therefore dietary inclusion of DDG as a replacement for fish meal could depress the growth of juvenile rockfish.
