Usefulness of electronic radial endoscopic color Doppler ultrasonography in esophageal varices: comparison with convex type

Abstract: Electronic radial ECDUS provides clear color flow images of blood vessels in esophageal varices with the additional advantages of forward-view optics and extended 270 degrees views. Electronic radial ECDUS was superior to convex-type ECDUS in detecting palisade veins and pulsatile waves.

“…The mechanism of B-RTO-related aggravation of EV involves changes in hemodynamics, including changes in pressure and blood flow associated with shunt occlusion [11, 19]. Our results of univariate analysis showed that sex, history of EV or treatment for EV before B-RTO, T-bil, prothrombin time, MELD score, draining vein diameter, HVPG, changes in HVPG, and volume of 5 % EOI were significant risk factors.…”

“…We previously reported use of ECDUS for evaluating the hemodynamics of esophago-gastric varices [11,12]. Iwase et al [13] reported that ECDUS is a useful method for the evaluation of gastric varices and for endoscopic obliteration of varices with cyanoacrylate glue.…”

“…The Pentax FG-36UX (Pentax, Tokyo, Japan) convextype instrument that was used in our previous reports [1][2][3] was difficult to insert and to apply in obtaining images. In another previous study, an instrument with forward-viewing optics (i.e., electronic radial ECDUS, EG-3630UR) facilitated insertion relative to the FG-36UX instrument [4] and provided 270°images. We discovered that obtaining J-turn or U-turn views was difficult owing to the stiffness of the distal tip, which limited the flexibility of the scope.…”

“…We previously reported the utility of ECDUS (convex-type scanning instruments with forward-oblique viewing) for evaluating the hemodynamics of esophago-gastric varices [1][2][3], and mentioned the improved performance of electronic radial ECDUS, relative to the convex type, in evaluating the hemodynamics of esophageal varices [4].…”
