User Experience Evaluation in Intelligent Environments: A Comprehensive Framework

Abstract: ‘User Experience’ (UX) is a term that has been established in HCI research and practice, subsuming the term ‘usability’. UX denotes that interaction with a contemporary technological system goes far beyond usability, extending to one’s emotions before, during, and after using the system and cannot be defined only by studying the fundamental usability attributes of effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction. Measuring UX becomes a substantially more complicated endeavor when the interaction target is not j… Show more

“…The People þ AI Guidebook provides guidelines organized in six chapters, namely, user needs and defining success, data collection and evaluation, mental models, explainability and trust, feedback and control, errors and graceful failure. Furthermore, a comprehensive framework has been proposed for the evaluation of UX in intelligent environments, identifying the following key UX constructs: intuitiveness, unobtrusiveness, adaptability and adaptivity, usability, appeal and emotions, safety and privacy, technology acceptance and user adoption (Ntoa et al, 2021b).…”

“…Regarding the evaluation of the prototype, this was carried out iteratively using two user groups. The first group was comprised of usability and user experience experts that evaluate an interactive application based on the Heuristic Evaluation method [116], which is an expert-based review method that is highly beneficial to eliminate usability problems before testing with representative end users, [117,118] also taking into account evaluation methods targeted on museum experience [119,120]. A small group of evaluators examined the user interfaces to spot violations of established usability principles, commonly known as heuristics [121].…”

“…Regarding the user experience on intelligent environments, the authors of [Ntoa et al 2021], propose a methodological and conceptual framework to support research, design, and evaluation of user experience in intelligent environments. In their framework they explain the parameters of user experience to be evaluated, indicating how to evaluate them and when is the best time to do it.…”
