Uses of Glass in Architecture: Heat Losses of Buildings Based on Translucent Structures

Abstract: At present time translucent structures have appeared to be the most crucial issues regarding building envelopes in relation to high heat losses in the cold periods of the year. Development of the methods to improve thermal properties of translucent structures is considered to be an up-to-date issue. Heat losses of exhibition halls with varied dimensions ratio and energy consumption of heating systems have been determined for the case of the city of Saint-Petersburg (Russia)

“…Civil designer try to reach energy efficiency by applying specific constructive decisions, such as supplementary thermal insulation of enclosure structures [6,7], decentralized ventilation systems with heat recovery [8], suspended ventilated facade systems [9] and also through the use of renewable energy sources [10,11,12]. Criterion of energy efficiency is becoming one of the most crucial even when choose a window [13] and already took into account in designing of translucent structures, which lead to big heat losses [14]. The article [15] contains some architectural planning and constructive solutions to save energy and ensure energy efficiency of residential buildings and analyses the effect of the shape and size of the building and the level of thermal insulation and sealing of external walls on the parameters of heating energy consumption in the building.…”

“…The above studies focused on the effect of solar radiation on thermal comfort in outdoor or in-vehicle scenarios. Due to the increasing use of curtain walls in modern buildings, 17,18 the extent of the influence of solar radiation on indoor thermal comfort has been emphasized. With manual solar shades, Yao et al 19 found that comfortable hours were 20.6%-37.3% more than with unshaded windows.…”

“…Many studies, standards, numerous tests of materials and structures are devoted to this problem. However, because of the importance of this problem and the development of technology, the relevance of the fire safety and search for new technical solutions in this area are retained [1,2].…”
