Using lexical chains for keyword extraction

Abstract: Keywords can be considered as condensed versions of documents and short forms of their summaries. In this paper, the problem of automatic extraction of keywords from documents is treated as a supervised learning task. A lexical chain holds a set of semantically related words of a text and it can be said that a lexical chain represents the semantic content of a portion of the text. Although lexical chains have been extensively used in text summarization, their usage for keyword extraction problem has not been f… Show more

“…In this study, the keywords were assigned manually by the instructor to each item since the number of learning materials used was relatively small. An automatic keyword extraction can be used when the number of items is large (Ercan & Cicekli, 2007). However, the recommended items may differ between the case where human assigned keywords are used and the case where automatically extracted keywords are used, and as the similarities between items are heavily dependent on the number of the matched keywords, this may affect the recommendation accuracy.…”

“…These keywords found in articles are important because they represent the concepts that authors want to communicate and draw the readers and the scientific community attention. According to Ercan and Cicekli (2007), the keywords are concise representations of a certain text, which allows the reader to identify the relevance of the theme in advance. In this sense, the following analysis presents the articles distribution of the Bibliographic Portfolio regarding the coverage of the subjects in relation to sustainability.…”

“…The different approaches for the first technique -keyword extraction-can be grouped into three categories: systems based on machine learning; systems based on rules for patterns and systems supported by statistical criteria (Ercan and Cicekli, 2007;Giarlo, 2005;Kaur and Gupta, 2010). These different approaches can also be combined.…”
