Using routine programmatic data to measure HIV incidence among pregnant women in Botswana

Abstract: Introduction Pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa have high risk of HIV acquisition, yet approaches for measuring maternal HIV incidence using routine surveillance systems are undefined. We used programmatic data from routine antenatal care (ANC) HIV testing in Botswana to measure real-world HIV incidence during pregnancy. Methods From January 2018 to September 2019, the Botswana Ministry of Health and Wellness implemented an HIV testing program at… Show more

“…Wellcontrolled research studies may also exclude adolescents who are most at risk for poor sexual and reproductive health outcomes such as those who live and work on the street, potentially limiting generalizability of findings (66,67). Yet programmatic data remain a relatively under-utilized resource to examine the effectiveness of HIV-related interventions and implementation strategies for key populations (68)(69)(70)(71). As programs continue to roll out biomedical prevention interventions for AGYW such as longacting PrEP, program data offer an opportunity to keep pace and quickly tailor and adapt implementation strategies, thus providing for a more nuanced and more efficient HIV response.…”

“…For example, documenting implementation activities provides information for implementers, key evaluation stakeholders, and individuals who wish to implement similar interventions and can help inform how they might adapt or modify support activities to enhance implementation ( 11 ). Routinely collected programmatic data is increasingly being recognized as an important data source in implementation science that can capture the implementation process and help identify early implementation barriers and actions taken to address these ( 12 , 13 ). Compared to participant-level research data, it is often collected more frequently throughout implementation, is less expensive to collect, and can capture more system-level implementation barriers and strategies.…”

“…Worldwide 39 million individuals remained living with HIV/AIDS in 2022 and 2.58 million individuals became recently infected with HIV/AIDS in 2022 and roughly 624,000 individuals deceased from AIDS-associated sicknesses. In 2022 alone, it's estimated that 28.7 million persons remained receiving ARVs therapy in 2022 and 79.3 million individuals have developed diseased with HIV from the time when the start of the HIV widespread [1]. Since then, it is estimated that around 36.3 million individuals have deceased from HIV/AIDS-associated infections from the time when the start of widespread [1].…”
