Using SVC for SSO Damping and Its Side-effects on the AC System

Abstract: This paper briefly introduces the first project in China using a Static Var Compensator (SVC) to damp Sub-Synchronous Oscillations (SSO) excited by fixed series compensation. Since the SVC function of this project is to damp SSO, it is necessary to study its side-effects on the ac system when damping SSO. A real time digital simulator (RTDS) model for this project is developed and a closed-loop test platform is established, which is comprised of an RTDS and a physical SVC controller. Based on the platform, thi… Show more

“…Furthermore, a system model is constructed based on the real-time digital simulator. Likewise, series capacitor compensation caused by SSO is mitigated by the dampingcontroller SVC based on the generalized phase compensation approach [125]. Initially, eigenvalue analysis was conducted on a multi-machine system.…”

“…The reactive power output range of STATCOM is -40Mvar ~ 40Mvar. In order to compare SVC with STATCOM in the effect of suppressing SSO [12][13][14], SVC and STATCOM both are parallel connected at generator bus via a connection transformer (ratio is 25kV/25kV). The schematic diagrams are shown in Fig.…”
