Using UAV for automatic lithological classification of open pit mining front

Abstract: Mine planning is dependent on the natural lithologic features and on the definition of their limits. The geological model is constantly updated during the life of the mine, based on all the information collected so far, plus the knowledge developed from the exploration stage up to the mine closure. As the mine progresses, the amount of available data increases, as well as the experience of the geological modeller and mine planner who deliver the short, medium, and long-term plans. This classical approach can b… Show more

“…As an open source framework, Tensorflow integrates several models including convolutional neural network, RNN network, and LSTM model [25]. The emergence of Tensorflow framework makes the use of deep learning model simpler and convenient and reduces the difficulty of applying deep learning model [26]. The specific experimental environment is shown in Table 1.…”

“…This result shows the influence of the variability on any type of visual identification on lithological materials. The regular sampling issue in 3-D where samples cannot be directly read in accumulated views has been solved with pseudo-regular samples, with a spacing between the floating points that is approximately equal to the average distance of the original dense cloud [76].…”

“…UAVs are also used for oblique photogrammetry, which involves obtaining 3D information of the target object by planning multiple routes to obtain oblique photographs at a 45° pitch angle from four directions or acquiring images from five directions-front, back, left, right, and down-through a single route in a five-shot manner [32][33][34]. It has enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years for applications in survey and mapping, specifically in the 3D modeling of buildings (structures), acquisition of DSM/DEM of open-pit mining slopes, 3D mapping of steep coastal cliffs, establishment of large-scale slope surface models, and identification of emergent strata [35][36][37][38]. However, oblique photogrammetry is disadvantageous because its flight altitude is suitable for a high-elevation surface, and the accuracy of the acquired data is limited by distance.…”
