Using water quality variables to predict light attenuation coefficient: case study in Shihmen Reservoir

Abstract: The amount of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the water column is of fundamental importance in determining the growth of aquatic plant and aquatic primary production. Light attenuation in aquatic ecosystems has important ecological implication and water quality applications. In the present study, the light attenuation through the water column in the Shihmen Reservoir, Taiwan was measured. A light attenuation coefficient (K e ) can be derived from the PAR measurements at each stations. The linear r… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the use of measurements of hemispherical spectral radiance (irradiance) is preferable to obtain more reliable attenuation coefficients. Such irradiance measurements are scarce, but they have been performed in the Mediterranean Sea with moored radiometers at fixed levels below the surface (Gernez and Antoine, 2009), in field experiments in the Irish Sea and open ocean (Bowers and Mitchelson-Jacob, 1996;Darecki et al, 2011), and in lakes and reservoirs (Liu et al, 2010;Heiskanen et al, 2015). In this way, and within the framework of the above-mentioned ALEX project, sporadic measurements of underwater downwelling spectral irradiance were performed during the 4 month study with the new equipment.…”

“…43) The α(λ) values were similar for U.S. lake and pond waters, 44) and they can be conveniently estimated by the concentrations of DOM and suspended matters. 28,45,46) S(λ) in Eq. 2 is a function of α(λ), and the larger the α(λ), the smaller the S(λ).…”

“…The repercussions of these various disturbances that take place in the lake watershed are most strongly felt in the littoral zone rather than in the pelagic zone (Cohen et al, 1993;Devidal et al, 2007;Ogutu-Ohwayo et al, 1997;Søndergaard et al, 2003). They alter the different ecological functions of breeding and feeding habitats for certain species of fish and other organisms such as amphibians and benthic macroinvertebrates (Dai, 2009;Dong et al, 2018;Li et al, 2009;Liu et al, 2010).…”
