The bioregion: an integrated approach to rural planning at Serra da Mantiqueira This research presents an overview of territorial planning and emphasizes the importance of rural territorial planning as a way of revitalizing the development dynamics of our society. Healthy rural territories contribute to greater ecological stability, helping balance the impacts of human actions, as well as offering the opportunity to cultivate ways of life integrated with the natural ecosystem. Given the magnitude of current global challenges, we find ourselves presented with the opportunity and the need to evaluate strategies and concepts, such as integrated and systemic planning, that until recently were dormant in Western cultures and which, however, are now more naturally put into practice. This research encompasses the concept of bioregion, bioeconomy, payments for environmental services, among others. We explore the opportunities for establishing a bioregion that englobes São Bento do Sapucaí (SBS), Serra da Mantiqueira, and surrounding municipalities. Quantitative methods were employed in this research to analyze data on land use, the valuation of rural properties, and patterns of household occupancy, providing insights into trends in the macro study area. A micro study area consisting of two watersheds was also selected, where we applied remote sensing to assess local ecological qualities, and the alignment between current land use and the area's natural aptitude. The contribution of this research lies in mapping spatial and territorial planning processes in recent decades and presenting a conceptual proposition that places the territory as the foundation and engine of human and natural dynamics. This approach favors systemic methods for territorial planning and environmental conservation.
