Uterine Dehiscence: A Rare Cause of Postpartum Puerperal Sepsis

Abstract: Uterine dehiscence (partial or complete) is a rare complication of lower segment cesarean section (LSCS). Puerperal sepsis with intra-abdominal abscess following this event has been rarely reported. The delay in diagnosis and management of the condition can result in significant morbidity and mortality. We herein report three cases of puerperal sepsis along with intra-abdominal abscess associated with uterine dehiscence following LSCS. These patients in the current case series presented with complaints of feve… Show more

“…Infections and subsequent spillage of pathogenic organisms into the peritoneum are the cause of weakening in uterine scar tissue and occurred the peritonitis or abscess formation. Similar consequence observed in the myometrium during LSCS, which the gradual spread of intra-uterine pathological organisms into the peritoneal cavity is occurred and caused facial dehiscence [4,11] . Among diagnostic methods, 3D ultrasound is better method for detection of dehiscence than routine transvaginal ultrasound that is applicable for fluid collection or hematoma in the scar area [6] .…”

“…Partial or complete Uterine Dehiscence (UD) following endomyometritis (puerperal sepsis) is a rare complication of lower segment cesarean section (LSCS) delivery [3] . This rare occurrence is very dangerous and potentially life threatening complication of CS with limited literature [4,5] .…”

“…Infection associated with uterine dehiscence can manifest with symptoms such as fever, tachycardia, anemia, and signs of sepsis, along with suprapubic and vaginal tenderness. Diagnosis and treatment often involve exploratory laparotomy, and conservative resuturing can be an option, especially when there is no severe wound infection [ 18 ]. Choden et al [ 19 ] presented a case of uterine wound dehiscence with pelvic abscess following a cesarean section, characterized by symptoms of paralytic ileus and surgical site infection.…”
