Utilising elastic waves of acoustic emission to assess the condition of spray nozzles in a marine diesel engine

Abstract: This article presents an original method of using elastic waves of acoustic emission (AE) to assess the technical condition of nozzles in marine diesel engines. The developed method makes it possible to detect the early stages of wear by friction of the needle-nozzle pair. The phenomenon of AE and the possibility of its use in evaluating the condition of marine diesel-engine injectors are discussed. Experiments are presented in which the AEs were used to evaluate the condition of both a new injector and an inj… Show more

“…This process destroys polar nitrogen and oxygen compounds, thus leading to a deterioration of the lubricity of diesel fuel. Fuel injection system parts deterioration after using low quality fuels is reported in analogous situations in marine engines [20]. Several researchers reported that biodiesel blending at low percentages may significantly improve the lubricating properties of low sulfur diesel fuel.…”

“…In the AE source the function of amplitude changes in the stress field has a form of a unit/single peak, the sensor is placed in the pump body (housing of the valve unit, and the elastic wave propagates in a homogeneous medium. The basic equation describing the signal propagation path can have this form [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]:…”

“…As this research shown, although field measurement involves a lot of data collection and analysis, it is the most direct and reliable method in studying subway vibration propagation. Moreover, field measurement may be an original method of using elastic waves of acoustic emission to assess the technical condition of subway system, such as rail wear and structural damage [30,31].…”
