Utilization and Abandonment of Low Vision Devices Prescribed on a Mobile Clinic

Abstract: Although more device recommendations are given per patient on the mobile clinic, there is no significant difference in device abandonment for patients seen on the mobile clinic versus other outpatient LVR delivery models.

“…The only LVAs without mixed responses were audio solutions and wearable electronic LVAs which received only positive feedback (each N = 3) while binoculars received only negative feedback (N = 3). This could make a case for wearable LVAs addressing an unmet need for distance vision, as previously described in the literature 25,39 . Since 32% of the activities recorded in this study required viewing targets positioned more than 1 meter away from the observer 27 , LVAs facilitating distance vision may be taken up to a greater extent if they were built to meet these needs.…”

“…In a recent review, factors leading to LVA abandonment included devices being too heavy, taking up too much space, suffering from poor ergonomics, being considered impractical for handling, limited technical performance, insufficient magnifying power, time‐consuming operation, poor ease of use or substantial maintenance requirements 24 . Particularly, LVAs for distance vision have been found to be abandoned or disused rather commonly 25 . Without addressing user requirements, there is a risk that the next‐generation of LVAs will also fail to meet the needs of those living with sight loss and will not be widely adopted.…”

“… 12 This finding is also in line with the 17% abandonment rate reported in the context of patients receiving magnifiers via a novel low vision mobile clinic delivery model. 27 We anticipated that this low discontinuation rate may be an underestimate, given the number of participants who withdrew from the study without providing any reasons, as well as a possible social desirability bias in the responses of the remaining participants. The cost involved in obtaining the device may also influence the motivation to maintain usage over the time.…”

“…We defined late discontinuance as when a participant reported complete nonuse of the device in the previous 3 months, a period commonly used in previous research. 27 The tasks were recorded using 94 open and closed questions adopted from and including the items of the Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale 28 and the Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology 29 (see additional analyses of these measures in our parallel study 30 ) and questions specifically developed for this study about a device user's characteristics and changes in use. 22 The questionnaires were administered at baseline by the low vision therapist and self-administered through a URL link at 2 weeks and 3 and 6 months after randomization.…”

“…Според проучване в САЩ на Gobeille и Malkin [12] отказването от вече назначена и започната зрителна рехабилитация най-често се случва в групата с препоръчани телескопични очила. Според авторите преференциално се използват електронните увеличители и лупите, като резултатите относно адаптацията и отказването от оптично средство не се различават особено на 3-тия месец и на 1-вата година.…”
