In this article, a new approach is applied to reuse Artemisia residue (AR) as filler in polyurethane (PU) foam for vegetable oil sorption for discarded cooking oil applications. The pristine PU and PU/X%AR foams (X stands for AR content of 5–20%wt/wt) were characterized by SEM, density, contact angle (CA), thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The influence of two experimental factors, such as contact time (30–180 s) and initial vegetable oil concentration (20–200 g/L), was investigated in vegetable oil and vegetable oil/mineral water systems. The AR loading of the foams increased the foams' density and influenced the morphological, physical, thermal, and sorption properties. The PU/20%AR sample presented the highest CA (122.5°) and the best sorption capacity and efficiency in both systems due to the small pores size and higher frequency of pores. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models well defined the sorption mechanisms. The Langmuir model represented the best fit of experimental data for PU/20%AR with a maximum adsorption capacity of 16.86 g/g. The PU/20%AR presented reusability of 7 cycles, conserving their hydrophobicity after the process. Therefore, AR is an innovative route as fillers in PU foams for discarded vegetable oil sorption, and the circular economy can benefit from the reuse of discarded vegetable cooking oil.

An environmental pollution problem is caused in part by packaging materials made from non-biodegradable synthetic polymers derived from petroleum. In this study, eco-friendly biofoams derived from natural rubber (NR) latex and rice starch (RS) were manufactured on a laboratory scale using the Dunlop process. Rice starch content was varied from 0 to 50 phr. The morphological, thermal, physical, mechanical, and biodegradability properties of the NR/RS biocomposite foams were characterized. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to assess the morphology of the foam cells. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to investigate the thermal characteristics. When RS was present, it was discovered that the biocomposite foams had decreased thermal stability and enhanced biodegradability. Introducing RS into the NR/RS biocomposite foams also decreased tensile strength, elongation at break, and rebound resilience but increased the 100% modulus, hardness, compression force deflection (CFD), and compression set. The NR/RS biocomposite foams better preserved the banana fruit than the absence of foam, with lower ethylene accumulation, lower total soluble solids (TSS), higher pulp firmness, and good color preservation. This demonstrated that these NR/RS biocomposite foams helped to preserve banana fruit quality during storage and could be used in sustainable packaging applications.

Bio-Based Polymer Developments from Tall Oil Fatty Acids by Exploiting Michael Addition

In this study, previously developed acetoacetates of two tall-oil-based and two commercial polyols were used to obtain polymers by the Michael reaction. The development of polymer formulations with varying cross-link density was enabled by different bio-based monomers in combination with different acrylates—bisphenol A ethoxylate diacrylate, trimethylolpropane triacrylate, and pentaerythritol tetraacrylate. New polymer materials are based on the same polyols that are suitable for polyurethanes. The new polymers have qualities comparable to polyurethanes and are obtained without the drawbacks that come with polyurethane extractions, such as the use of hazardous isocyanates or reactions under harsh conditions in the case of non-isocyanate polyurethanes. Dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, and universal strength testing equipment were used to investigate the physical and thermal characteristics of the created polymers. Polymers with a wide range of thermal and mechanical properties were obtained (glass transition temperature from 21 to 63 °C; tensile modulus (Young’s) from 8 MPa to 2710 MPa and tensile strength from 4 to 52 MPa). The synthesized polymers are thermally stable up to 300 °C. The suggested method may be used to make two-component polymer foams, coatings, resins, and composite matrices.
