Utilization of Reconstituted High-tannin Sorghum in the Diets of Broiler Chickens

Abstract: The present experiment was conducted to assess the effect of reconstitution (R) on utilization of red sorghum (S) in diets of broiler chickens. Day-old broiler chicks (n=360) were randomly divided into 36 groups of 10 chicks each, and 9 dietary treatments were allotted to 4 groups (replicates) in a completely randomized design. Out of the 9 treatments, one was corn-soy based control (D 1 ). The rest of the treatments were diets consisting of four levels (25, 50, 75 and 100% part of corn) of raw red sorghum (S2… Show more

“…T 1 and T 2 relatively have better dry matter conversion ratio as compared to T 3 and T 4 . This result is in agreement with Kumar et al [25] no significant difference in dry matter conversion ratio during the starter phase. Dry matter conversion ratio during finishing phase of experimental period was not also significantly different (P>0.05) among the treatments.…”

“…Melaku [24] reported no significant difference average daily weight gain of Hubbard classic broiler strain during the starter phase. During the starter phase (1 to 3 weeks) chicks attend statistically similar body weight gain when corn replaced by sorghum from 25% up to 50% [25]. The average daily and final body weight gain during the finisher phase is presented in Table 6 and no significant difference (P>0.05) was observed among the treatments.…”

“…The increasing activity of LPL enzyme will break down TG into glycerol and fatty acids and will be released into the blood vessels to be transferred to the destined cells (Piliang & Djojosoebagio, 2006). The tolerance limit of tannins in chicken feed is 2.6 g/kg (Kumar et al, 2005) and saponins at 4.5 g/kg ration (Abbas, 2013).…”
