Utilization possibilities of steel slag as backfill material in coastal structures

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the utilization possibilities of steel slags, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) slags, as backfill material in coastal structures. Within the scope of the study, physical, mechanical and chemical properties of the steel slags were investigated and their potential to create environmental risks were evaluated. The results showed that soundness loss and filler content ratio were below the limit values for steel slags to be used as backfill material. … Show more

“…In recent years, there has been increasing research interest in exploring resource utilization options for SS. Current approaches primarily focus on utilizing its high strength and wear resistance as road backfill material [5,6], leveraging its porosity and alkalinity for sewage treatment purposes [7,8], harnessing its rich P, Ca, and Si elements to produce fertilizer [9,10], or incorporating it as a component in cement mixers to manufacture cement products [11]. However, these utilization methods still face certain challenges.…”

“…[1] By the way, it is also expensive from an economic point of view, since metallurgical companies pay huge sums of money for storing slag. [2] At the same time, most of its iron content is often comparable to ore concentrates and is a valuable raw material abandoned by the owner. For example, scale from rolling and forging industries can contain up to 55-60 % iron oxides.…”
