Validation of same-day bowel preparation regimen using 4L polyethylene glycol

Abstract: A split-dose regimen is the recommended method of bowel preparation for colonoscopy. However, for colonoscopy performed in the afternoon, same-day preparation is recommended rather than a split-dose regimen. No study has compared the efficacy of same-day bowel-cleansing for morning colonoscopy (MC) and afternoon colonoscopy (AC). The aims of this study were to evaluate the bowel-cleansing efficacy, adverse events, and patient tolerability of same-day bowel preparation for colonoscopy using 4L polyethylene glyc… Show more

“…The primary outcome measure was patient bowel cleansing. The efficacy of bowel preparation in both groups was evaluated by using the validated Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS) [ 20 ]. The endoscopist scored the ascending, mid (transverse and descending), and rectosigmoid segments of the colon separately.…”

“…Colonoscopy was performed by 3 attending physicians with more than 4 years of experience using an Olympus (Olympus, Seoul, Korea) series Q260 or Q290 colonoscope. 13,14 Bowel preparation was done with 4 L of polyethylene glycol. To obtain optimal bowel cleansing, patients were instructed to ingest additional liquid until no solid particles were observed in the bowel effluent.…”

“…The bowel preparation quality e cacy was recorded on four grades: poor (0-2 points in total), fair (3-5 points in total; or 6-7points in total but sub-score < 2 in one or more colon segments), good (6-7 points in total, and each colon segment score ≥ 2), and excellent (8 ± 9 points in total). [13,14] Excellent or good were classi ed as optimal while fair or poor were de ned as suboptimal for the analysis.…”
