Validation of Symptoms Related to Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

Abstract: The aim of this study was to validate some recurring definitions of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) obtained from descriptive epidemiological studies. We devised questions concerning concepts such as ‘tiredness’, ‘resistible sleepiness’, ‘irresistible sleepiness’ and ‘sudden sleep attacks’. The validation was done by comparing the answers with the results of the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), considered the gold standard, or criterion measure, for the diagnosis of EDS. The sample study comprised 73 sub… Show more

“…The first investigated the presence of SRED and NES by means of the Eating Disorder Questionnaire (EDQ); the second was on sleep characteristics (total sleep time, subjective sleep latency, etc) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), investigated by means of Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Bologna Questionnaire on Sleepiness Related Symptoms (BQS). 9 The last section investigated psychopathological traits by means of Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI-2), a multiscale measure of symptoms commonly associated with anorexia nervosa and bulimia; 10 Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI), designed to measure obsessive-compulsiveness; 11 and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), for measuring depression.…”

“…In a series of 21 children affected by childhood-onset myotonic dystrophy [21] sleep disturbances were reported in 66% of children with DM1, periodic limb movements and sleep apnea syndromes in 38% and 29% respectively and were more frequently associated with fatigue. Symptoms of daytime sleepiness and fatigue are often overlapping [16,19,22] and progress over time, negatively impacting cognition [23]. Fatigue is present in most patients with DM1 [17,24] and is the second most common symptomatic theme in DM1 while having the greatest impact on patients' lives [17,25].…”

“…The degree of EDS gold standard measurement is the multiple sleep onset latency test (MSLT) (Reynolds et al, 1982;Philip et al, 1997;Chervin, 2000;Rinaldi et al, 2001). This test consists of five short and equally spaced sessions during the day, in which subjects lie in a dark room and are instructed to sleep.…”
