Validity and reliability of ALPS-Neo pain and stress assessment scale in newborns

Abstract: Purpose:The aim of this study is to determine the validation and reliability of the Turkish version of ALPS-Neo pain and stress assessment scale for newborn infants. Materials and methods:This study is a methodological research. 51 newborns, treated and cared at neonatal intensive care unit, were included in the study. Data were collected by newborn information form, ALPS-Neo pain and stress assessment scale, Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS). The scale was assessed in terms of language and content validity, c… Show more

“…Neonatal Pain and Stress Rating Scale (ALPS-Neo); The scale was developed by Lundqvist et al [18] to evaluate pain and stress in preterm and term newborns and was adapted into Turkish by Serap Ceylan and Bolışık [19] as a 3-point Likert-type scale consisting of 5 items (newborn's facial expression, breathing pattern, tonus of the extremities, hand and foot activities, and activity levels). The measurements are made by observation.…”

“…To assess the pain experienced by the PIs, the ALPS‐Neo Pain and Stress Assessment Scale (ALPS‐Neo) was used. The scale was developed by Lundqvist et al (2014) in English and adapted to in Turkish by Ceylan and Bolışık (2017b). The maximum total score for this scale is 10, and the lowest possible score is 0.…”

“…When evaluating the scale, a score of 0–2 indicates that the responder is affected by pain and stress, a score of 3–5 indicates that the responder experiences moderate pain and stress and a score of 5 points indicates that the responder is affected by severe pain and stress. The Cronbach's α values of the scale in the original and adaptation study were .95 and .81, respectively (Ceylan & Bolışık, 2017b; Lundqvist et al, 2014).…”

“…The total internal reliability score of the scale was reported as 0.91 and the internal consistency alpha coefficient as 0.95 (Lundqvist et al, 2014). The Turkish validity and reliability study of the scale was performed by Ceylan and Bolıs ¸ık (2017), and their permission to use the scale in this study was obtained. The newborns' ALPS-Neo scores were recorded before, during and after the heel lance procedure.…”
