Validity and Reliability of Health Belief Model Questionnaire for Promoting Breast Self-examination and Screening Mammogram for Early Cancer Detection

Abstract: ASR do exist with the ASR amongst the Chinese being the highest at 41.5 per 100,000 population. Additionally, the ASR for the Indians was 37.1 and the Malays was the lowest at 27.2 per 100,000 population (Ministry of Health Malaysia, 2016). As such, the ASR of breast cancer has brought about high concern amongst health professionals to detect breast cancer at an early stage.

“…First, the literature can be searched for previous HBM studies using appropriate instruments to the objective at hand. For example, for breast self-examination the HBM questionnaire developed by Champion ( 32 ) has been widely used, for a more recent publication in this context see e.g., Norfariha ( 33 ). Furthermore, there are published HBM scales developed in the areas of health beliefs for antibiotic therapy ( 34 ) or related to cardiovascular disease ( 35 ) and sleep apnea ( 36 ).…”

“…Realizing breast cancer as one of the health priorities in Malaysia, women should be empowered to perform BSE through more effective educational and training programs based on theory-driven approaches [13] . The health belief model (HBM) is the most widely used model or theory which conceptualizes potential barriers or factors that influence a desired health behavioral adoption [14] . It is thus recommended to employ the health behavior theories in programs and interventions using derived theoretical constructs and pathways [15] , [16] to enable drive behavior changes.…”
