Validity and Reliability of the Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament Test and the Thumb Localizing Test in Patients With Stroke

Abstract: Background: Somatosensory impairment is common in patients who have had a stroke and can affect their motor function and activities of daily living (ADL). Therefore, detecting and treating somatosensory impairments properly is considered to be very important, and various examinations have been developed. However, the reliability and validity of few of them have been verified due to differences in the procedure of each examiner or poor quantification by the examination itself. Objective: We hypothesized that, wi… Show more

“…Regarding methodology, in our investigation we used Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments and a Weber two-point aesthesiometer. These are widely available and frequently utilized tools which allow for assessment of cutaneous pressure thresholds [25]. There are some drawbacks of these tools, e.g., dependence on the skill of the user and the quality and maintenance of the product [26,27].…”

“…31 , 32 It is widely used in various diseases such as diabetes mellitus and compression neuropathy, and it is reliable and validated in stroke. 33 The threshold of tactile sensation is measured using a total of 20 filaments with a target force of 0.008–300 g. With the patient’s eyes closed, the examiner presses the filament onto the area to be examined for tactile sensation until it bends 90°. Beginning with the thinnest filament, the smallest threshold is used as the test result.…”
