Validity and reproducibility of an incremental sit-to-stand exercise test in healthy middle-aged individuals

Abstract: [Purpose] We aimed to evaluate the validity and reproducibility of the incremental sit-to-stand exercise test for aerobic fitness evaluation in healthy middle-aged individuals. [Participants and Methods] Thirteen healthy middle-aged individuals randomly underwent the incremental sit-to-stand exercise and cycle ergometer tests, and the peak oxygen uptake was measured during both tests. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were used to assess the strength of the association between the peak oxygen uptake measured … Show more

“…A avaliação da capacidade de exercício tem como objetivo determinar a prescrição de exercícios, avaliar os efeitos do tratamento proposto e estimar um prognóstico [22]. O teste sentar-levantar da cadeira é um teste rápido e prático, correlacionando-se com a capacidade funcional [23,24].…”

“…It was first introduced in 1985 for the evaluation of lower limb muscle strength (6). Recently, an incremental STS test protocol was reported to be highly correlated with peak oxygen consumption during an exercise test in healthy individuals (7). STS tests are now considered feasible alternative tests for the assessment of functional fitness in older adults and in various patient populations (8)(9)(10).…”
