Validity of the Morningness‐Eveningness Scale for Children among Spanish Adolescents

Abstract: Adolescents tend to be much later chronotypes than other age groups. This circadian phase delay is attributed as much to biological as psychosocial factors. Because the consequences of this change on performance and health have been documented, questionnaires to identify morning and evening-type adolescents are necessary. The aim of the present study was to validate a Spanish version of the Morningness-Eveningness Scale for Children (MESC) by means of several relevant psychological variables as external criter… Show more

“…Morningness/Eveningness Scale for Children (MESC) was used as a measure of circadian preference among adolescents (Carskadon, Vieira, & Acebo, 1993;Díaz-Morales, Dávila, & Gutiérrez, 2007). The scale has 10 items about the preferred timing of activities such as spare time, tests, sleep timing, and so forth.…”

“…In Spain, for example, average of rise time (07:19) during the school weekdays is consequence of the fixed school start time. However, considering that the mean rising time during the weekend was 10:41, it seems that a significant sleep debt was accumulated during the school days, especially in E-types, who wake up 4:01 later during the weekend (M-types also wake up 2:48 later) than on weekdays Díaz-Morales, Dávila, & Gutiérrez, 2007;Gradisar, Gardner, & Dohnt, 2011).…”
