Value chain analysis of banana in Bench Maji and Sheka Zones of Southern Ethiopia

Abstract: Banana is produced by the highest number of farmers in Bench Maji and Sheka zones of the Southern region of Ethiopia. Even though the zones have high banana production potential, several constraints hamper the development of the banana sector along with the value chain. Therefore, this study was intended to analyze banana value chain in these zones of Ethiopia. Data from 180 banana producers were collected and analyzed by using descriptive statistics, marketing margin and econometric Heckman two-stage model. T… Show more

“…Lack of extension service leads producers to follow traditional management practices instead of modern technologies ( Gichora, 2003 ). Extension service avails information regarding improved technology usage that will increases honey production level ( Nigussie, 2011 ; Samuel 2014 ; Tarekegn et al., 2017a , Tarekegn et al., 2017b ). As the farmer becomes more experienced in agricultural production it will have a higher knowledge to identify challenges and coping mechanisms, therefore, they turn and focused on the production of cash crops rather than beekeeping activity.…”

“…Thus, the competitiveness of the chain is reflected into performances. In particular, the measures used in assessing the performance of a marketing system are the farmer's/grower's share of the retail price spread; the gross marketing margin or farm retail price and the proportion of a consumer's income spent on food (Gebremedhn et al, 2019;Tarekegn et al, 2020). The marketing margin is analyzed using the price difference of the actors in the marketing channels.…”

“…According to Mahamud (2016) and Shikur et al (2020), price cheating by traders, farmers' lack of bargaining power in the market, and unfair competition from illegal traders are the major marketing challenges faced by Ethiopian wheat farmers. To reduce the influence of local collectors, traders, and transporters on the pricing process, it is critical to establish marketing centers and cooperatives based on value chain studies (Tarekegn et al, 2020). Porter (1985) theory was one of the proposed solutions to popularize the concept of the value chain as a collection of generic activities that operate within a company and collaborate to provide value to customers.…”
