Value Chains and Technology Transfer to Agriculture in Developing and Emerging Economies

Abstract: Value chains in the agrifood sector are undergoing a rapid process of modernization, characterized by the emergence of private standards and different systems of vertical value chain governance. In this article we investigate the technological implications of these developments at the farm-level. We explicitly modelled the conditions under which technology transfer and adoption will occur in a value chain setting and reviewed the corresponding evidence on these issues. We find that technology transfer within a… Show more

“…23 For a formal model of the distributional and growth effects of technology transfer through value chains, see Kuijpers and Swinnen (2016). 24 Similarly, Negash and Swinnen (2013) and Riera and Swinnen (2016) find positive effects on food security of smallholder biofuel value chains in Ethiopia because of (a) enhanced cash income during lean periods and (b) spillover effects on increased food crop productivity through fertilizer access from value chain contracts.…”

“…Another important factor affecting the risk of hold up, and therefore the feasibility of a transfer is the type of technology that is being transferred. Two dimensions of technology seem to be of particular importance here (Kuijpers and Swinnen 2016): the time dimension and, the specificity of the technology.…”

“…where majority of the work force is associated with agriculture contributes less than 10% of the gross domestic product (GDP) to the country's economy. This is an alarming situation and with the unprecedented growth in human population, modern technologies should be used in agriculture sector in order to increase the growth of this sector in terms of yield and revenue [2].…”
