The study presents p-T-x-y phase equilibria measurements of an oxygenated compound (furan) and one of its potential solvent of extraction (toluene). The experimental technique of the equipment recently developed is based on a "static analytic" method. Measurements were done at three temperatures (313.02, 333.02 and 352.99 K) and pressures from 13 up to 375 kPa. The experimental data measured were successfully correlated, using a "gamma phi" approach, with the NRTL activity coefficient model.

One major sustainable development goal is to produce chemicals and fuels from renewable resources, such as biomass, rather than from fossil fuels. A key part of this development is data on the properties of chemicals that appear in this bio-based supply chain. Many of the chemicals have yet to be studied thoroughly, and data on their properties is lacking. Here, we present new experimental data on the properties of 11 bio-compounds, along with PC-SAFT parameters for modeling their properties. The measured data includes vapor pressures, compressed densities, and refractive indexes. The 11 bio-compounds are tetrahydrofuran, 2-pentanone, furfural, 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol, 2-methylfuran, dihydrolevoglucosenone, cyclopentyl methyl ether, 2-sec-butylphenol, levoglucosenone, γ-valerolactone, and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol.

Densities of pure furan, toluene, 1-octanol, n-hexane and, of binary liquid mixtures containing furan, has been measured from 303.15 K to 383.15 K at pressures up to 1.6 MPa, using a vibrating tube densimeter. Excess molar volumes have been calculated from the densities with an average standard uncertainty 0.02 cm 3 .mol -1 . Excess molar enthalpies of the binary mixtures were measured at temperatures ranging from 313.15 to 383.15 K at 0.5 MPa and/or 1.0 MPa, using flow mixing calorimeter. The average standard uncertainty on the whole measurements is less than 1%. The excess molar properties derived from experimental data were correlated using a Redlich-Kister polynomial functions, NRTL activity coefficient model and Prigogine Flory Patterson modelling is described and used to correlate the data.
