Variability in serpentinite mudflow mechanisms and sources: ODP drilling results on Mariana forearc seamounts

Abstract: [1] Samples of metamorphic rock were collected from drilled holes on ODP Leg 195 and in piston/gravity cores collected with the Jason 2 remotely operated vehicle from S. Chamorro Seamount, a serpentinite mud volcano on the Mariana forearc. The recovered muds are approximately 90% serpentinite, including grit-to boulder-sized clasts of serpentinized peridotites, but also contain a wide variety of small fragments of metabasic rocks. These metabasic fragments include high-pressure, low-temperature rocks derived f… Show more

“…The association of Isua serpentinites with carbonates and negative δ 66 Zn suggests that these rocks formed in conditions similar to those of the Mariana forearc, which is in line with previous conclusions about the Isua environment (15,37). Of all the parameters that this comparison with mud volcanoes (33,37) entails, the temperature range of 100-300°C (19) and the high pH of fluids (9-12.6) are the most noticeable. Metamorphic transformation of ultramafic rocks requires massive CO 2 uptake (10), while boiling of CO 2 -rich fluids causes a sharp increase of the pH of hydrothermal solutions and promotes crystallization of calcite, ankerite, and dolomite (38).…”

“…Modern serpentinite samples from three representative geological settings also were investigated to provide a context for the Archean data. These are from (i) the magma-starved Gakkel Ridge (Arctic Ocean), which supplies well-serpentinized samples from a midocean ridge setting; (ii) Baja California and the Alps, which typify ophiolites obducted onto continents; and (iii) Mariana forearc serpentinite mud volcanoes (19), which represent a subduction zone setting far from continental influence.…”

“…Fluids from the descending plate hydrate the fore-arc mantle and enable serpentinite muds to rise along faults to the seafloor (Fryer 2012). Blueschists found in the mud attest that they originate from depths as great as 25 km and their ascent is probably facilitated by subvertical faults cutting through the fore-arc (Fryer et al 2006). Following our scenario, we propose that they form along the segments of the initial paleo-transform fault zone that have been preserved from erosion.…”

“…Instead, basement rocks have been drilled close to the trench and even serpentinite mud volcanoes have been observed all along the Mariana fore-arc (Natland and Tarney 1981;Bloomer 1983;Fryer 1992;Lagabrielle et al 1992b;Fryer et al 1999). The diversity of metabasic rocks found in one of these seamounts can be explained by recycling of forearc materials through tectonic erosion and subduction of the fore-arc (Fryer et al 2006). The IBM margin has been classified as one of the most erosive margins in the world (e.g., von Huene and Scholl 1991;Lallemand 1995).…”

“…Dehydration (Fryer et al, 2006). In addition, springs often form (as a byproduct of the upwelling fluid, attributed to the sediment compaction and dehydration process) and deliver water to the seafloor that is typically fresher than seawater and highly alkaline, with pH up to 12.5 (see Spotlight 9 on page 174 of this issue ; Mottl et al, 2003Mottl et al, , 2004.…”
