Variability of biochemical characteristics in strains of Trichophyton mentagrophytes

Abstract: The characteristics of 23 strains of Trichophyton mentagrophytes isolated from clinical samples, were studied. Sabouraud agar was the most adequate medium to inhance at their utmost the different taxonomical features. Variability of enzymatic reactions in strains of T. mentagrophytes was observed.

“…The name T. mentagrophytes is used for anamorphs of Arthroderma benhamiae , Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii and possibly of Arthroderma simii [11–14] as well. It is no surprise therefore that this so‐called T. mentagrophytes species complex [13–17] comprises dermatophytes that are not identical with regard to their genetic, morphological and physiological criteria [18, 19]. As a consequence, a number of more or less distinct varieties of T. mentagrophytes have been described in the course of time, some of which, such as Trichophyton quinckeanum and Trichophyton erinacei , had even been regarded as separate species initially [20, 21].…”

“…17 The production of amylase was detected in T. mentagrophytes. 32 These fungi also produce kinases, including pseudokinases. These enzymes are involved in signalling and are necessary for adapting to the skin's niche.…”
